The expendables

A new performance featuring puppets, objects, and atmospheres, loosely inspired by Sylvester Stallone’s film The Expendables.

It tells the story of once-popular, now-forgotten and no-longer-needed… puppets.

These expendable heroes have nothing left to prove. They’re simply trying to survive — but when it truly matters, they’re ready to take on even the most impossible missions.

Buchty a loutky are Marek Bečka, Vítek Brukner, Zuzana Bruknerová, Radek Beran, Lukáš Valiska, Daniel Schenk, Tereza Kahánková, and Kateřina Schwarzová.

Buchty a loutky is an independent alternative puppet theatre company that performs for both children and adults.

The company was founded in 1991 by fresh graduates of the Puppet Department of DAMU, in a dormitory in Cheb. Since then, they have produced over 60 theatre premieres for both adults and children, as well as puppet and animated films, music videos, and many one-off projects in the fields of experimental theatre, music, visual arts, film, and their interconnection.

Today, Buchty a loutky regularly perform as a resident guest ensemble at the Švanda Theatre Studio in Prague’s Smíchov district, where they also have a small home base—but they are constantly on the move. Each year, they give around 250 performances throughout the Czech Republic and abroad.

With their distinctive creative approach, Buchty a loutky have developed a unique theatrical poetics. They reinterpret classical titles as well as original works with wit and unmistakable humor, placing strong emphasis on visual design, composed music, and live sound effects—a blend of old and new puppets, junk, toys, and the latest technologies.

Since their beginnings—when they stirred the waters of Czech puppet theatre with their now legendary productions—they have ranked among the top theatre companies not only in the Czech Republic but also internationally.
