Together they found their way out of darkness and silence. How?
Helen Keller is a heroine not only of the Deaf community but also of the blind. She was a writer, activist, lecturer, and the first deafblind person to graduate from Harvard University. Anne Sullivan was her lifelong guide and friend. But before the world knew them, they were a wild student and a stubborn teacher.
Two actresses—one Deaf and one hearing—will use physical theatre, visual elements, and Czech Sign Language to show you how a blind and Deaf girl learned to communicate. They will introduce you to different ways of connecting with others, including sign language and Braille. And perhaps they will inspire you with Helen’s incredible willpower to overcome obstacles and adversity of any kind.
The production is inspired by Jindra Jarošová’s book Via lucis.
The OUKEJ Theatre Company brings together both hearing and Deaf artists (graduates of JAMU) with the aim of not only raising awareness in the hearing majority world but also creating high-quality productions that educate, entertain, inspire, and touch audiences.
We perform our production Heroines?! not only for schools but also for the general public at evening performances and various festivals. Recently, we have participated in events such as the Setkání/Stretnutie Festival of Professional Theatres in Zlín and the Znakofest Festival in Prague.
This year, we are looking forward to, among other things, taking part in the International Festival of Professional Theatres in Banská Bystrica as well as the festival at Venuše ve Švehlovce in Prague.
